GREEN TEA: WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

1. What are the health benefits of green tea?
Green tea is among the richest natural sources of antioxidants, which have been linked with cancer prevention, decreased risk of stroke, and lowering blood cholesterol. Green tea has also been associated with fighting cavities slowing down potentially harmful blood clotting, and acting as an anti-inflammatory agent in arthritis.

2. What exactly are antioxidants?
Antioxidants bind harmful oxygen-containing molecules in your body called free radicals and peroxides that otherwise could damage your DNA and cell membranes. The process of breaking down food for energy creates free radicals in your body everyday. Naturally occurring antioxidants found in most plants including fruits and vegetables help your body keep free radicals in check.

3. How is green tea different from black tea?
Green and black tea originate from the same plant, Camellia sinensis. Green tea leaves are less processed because they are not fermented
like black tea. Green teas have a more delicate, fresh taste, whereas black teas are often more full-bodied and robust.

4. Can I drink brewed green tea hot or iced and get the same benefit?
Yes. The strong antioxidants, catechins, and flavonoids are in equal amounts in hot and iced green teas.

5. How much caffeine is in green tea?
An average 6oz. cup of green tea contains about 30mg of caffeine. For comparison, coffee has about 100mg.

6. Does adding sugar, lemon, honey, or milk effect the health benefits of green tea?
Although traditional green tea drinkers prefer not to add anything to their healthy concoction, for those who add milk and sweeteners to green tea, the research findings suggest you are in the clear. Sugars, sweeteners, lemon and milk do not appear to effect the antioxidant levels of green tea polyphenols.
